Steam Boiler Technical Specification
The TSE- and TS EN 12953-compliant technical requirements a steam boiler must meet, from material quality to test pressure and from safety equipment to control panel features.
STEAM BOILER AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
- The steam boiler must be a high-pressure, three-pass, fire/flue-tube, fully cylindrical, Scotch-type boiler with a rear reversal chamber, designed and manufactured in compliance with TS EN 12953 and EN standards, and TSE certified. A CE certificate alone is not sufficient.
- Pressure parts must be manufactured from P265GH or P355GH boiler plate compliant with EN 10028. Non-pressure parts such as doors and smoke boxes may be made from S235JR boiler plate.
- Flue tubes must be manufactured from normalized welded boiler tube compliant with EN 10217-2 up to 6 bar operating pressure, and from seamless drawn boiler tube to EN 10216-2 for pressures of 6 bar and above.
- The manufacturer must provide material certificates.
- Steam boiler design pressure must be 1.05 times the operating pressure; strength calculations must be based on this value.
- The steam boiler must be tested at 1.5 times operating pressure for one hour.
- Boiler tube sheets must have flanged edges; a flat tube sheet will not be accepted under any circumstances.
- To achieve good combustion, the main requirement for high boiler efficiency, the flame tube must be manufactured at a sufficient diameter and length.
- In boiler design, to reduce material use and thus cost, excessive thermal loading of heating surfaces, a practice that is problematic from a boiler engineering standpoint, must never be applied; the most suitable thermal load per unit heating surface (square meter) must be used.
- The manufacturer must declare the boiler's heating surface area.
- Boiler welds must be carried out by certified welders; the manufacturer must provide these certificates.
- The steam boiler body must be insulated with 100 mm rock wool.
- Flanges used on the steam boiler must be at least PN16 class.
- It must have an explosion door opening directly into the combustion chamber (flame tube, furnace).
- It must have at least one flame-viewing device made of fire-resistant ceramic glass.
- The steam boiler must have hand-holes and manholes allowing inspection of the water side.
- The steam boiler must have two safety valves.
- The bottom blowdown valve must be DN40 PN16.
- The surface blowdown valve must be DN25 PN16.
- There must be two level regulators.
- There must be two glass-type level gauges.
- The feedwater pump must be stainless and of the multi-stage type.
- Feedwater pump discharge pressure must be at least 20% higher than the steam boiler's operating pressure.
- The feedwater pump must be able to comfortably pump water at 102°C.
- There must be two feedwater pumps.
- There must be three stainless disc check valves on the feedwater discharge line.
- Condensate tank volume must equal the steam boiler's one-hour water requirement (example: a 5 t/h steam boiler requires a 5,000-liter condensate tank).
- A tandem-type water softener must be used, sized to the water hardness.
- All electrical devices on the steam boiler (burner, pumps, etc.) must be controlled from the boiler control panel.
- Steam and flue gas temperatures must be readable from the panel and adjustable to the desired setting.
- When steam or flue gas temperature exceeds the set value, a warning light system must activate, and this safety feature must stop the burner.
- The panel must have a light and sound alarm system for minimum steam boiler water level.
- The burner's fault indicator light must be visible on the control panel.
- The manufacturer is obliged to provide the operator with TSE and other quality certificates, along with the installation and layout diagram and operating instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a steam boiler technical specification cover?
A steam boiler technical specification covers TS EN 12953- and TSE-certified design and material quality (boiler plate, welding certificates), design/test pressures, safety equipment (safety valves, blowdown valves, level gauges), feedwater pump and condensate tank specifications, the water softening system, and control panel monitoring/alarm requirements.
