Water Treatment & Conditioning
Boiler Scale & Corrosion Inhibitor Chemicals
We prevent the risk of scaling and corrosion from boiler feedwater with phosphate, sulfite and amine boiler water conditioning chemicals, delivering fuel savings and a longer equipment service life.

Boiler Feedwater Conditioning Chemicals
Water is an abundant, odorless, tasteless compound essential to life on Earth.
Although the molecular structure of water (H2O) is quite simple and the substance is abundant, it behaves very differently from other compounds under certain conditions. For example, water in its solid state (ice) floats on liquid water; in nearly all other compounds on Earth, the solid phase is denser than the liquid phase and sinks.
Water has a high specific heat. Raising the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C requires 1 calorie of energy, higher than any substance except ammonia. This lets water store more energy, which is why it is used in many heat-transfer systems, most notably central heating systems and steam boilers.
Steam is an ideal heat carrier.
Water also has a high latent heat of vaporization: converting 1 gram of water into 1 gram of steam at 100°C requires 539 calories.
Water contains calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) ions that cause hardness. Carbon dioxide in the air combines with water to form carbonic acid, which reacts with calcium carbonate in rock to form calcium bicarbonate. Magnesium carbonate and bicarbonate react in a similar way.
As water boils in a steam boiler or steam generator, a crystalline scale layer (fouling, boiler stone) forms on the heat-transfer surfaces. This layer impedes heat transfer and causes energy loss; a 1 mm layer of scale on fire/flue tubes increases fuel consumption by 6-8%. Corrosion also occurs beneath the scale layer.
Dissolved gases, especially oxygen, also react with boiler plate and tubing to cause corrosion. Scale and oxygen corrosion cause faults not only in boiler materials but also in control instruments; a plant shutdown means a loss for the business.
With over 50 years of manufacturing and service experience, İtimat Kazan ve Makine Sanayi provides boiler water conditioning service to the businesses we service periodically. Through this service, using boiler-protective chemicals that prevent the scaling and corrosion risk that feedwater can cause, we both reduce maintenance and repair costs and contribute to the national economy by lowering fuel consumption.
Our service engineers take a sample of your feedwater, analyze it, and offer the most suitable solution for your facility.
BOILER CHEMICAL FORMULA
Phosphate, sulfite and amine products are used in boiler water conditioning.
Phosphate-based chemicals are used to prevent scale and corrosion. Sulfite-based chemicals bind the oxygen in the water's structure, preventing oxygen-driven corrosion and rusting. Amine compounds form a film layer on the boiler water side, reducing contact between water and metal and preventing rust.
Phosphate compounds react with calcium and magnesium salts in the water to prevent scaling, while the sulfite chemical binds oxygen to prevent corrosion in the system. Polyamine forms a film layer around the metal, reducing the interaction between water and metal and creating a hydrophobic environment. Boiler water conditioning chemicals prevent scaling, rusting and corrosion on the boiler's heat-transfer surfaces.
Phosphates
Phosphate anions form a soft compound with the calcium ions that cause hardness in water and settle to the bottom of the boiler. This precipitate does not form scale and is removed from the boiler via blowdown.
Film-Forming Amines
Used to prevent the corrosion that oxygen and carbon dioxide gases, dissolved in the steam, cause in steam lines. These materials can be dosed directly into the steam lines; they vaporize, travel with the steam, and form a protective film layer on the metal.
Neutralizing Amines
Dosed into the boiler feedwater or directly into the steam line. They vaporize into the steam and neutralize the gases in the water; they return to the boiler with the condensate and vaporize again. They are normally dosed at a rate that keeps the condensate pH at 9.
BENEFITS OF USING PROTECTIVE BOILER CHEMICALS
- Protecting the steam boiler or steam generator and its equipment from scale and rust
- Lower fuel consumption and energy savings
- Keeping the boiler water homogeneous, allowing less blowdown and thus saving water and energy
- Preventing oxygen corrosion thanks to oxygen inhibitors
- Keeping the pH value at the appropriate level
- Preventing corrosion thanks to corrosion inhibitors
- Its built-in chemical anti-foam helping produce drier steam during boiling
- Its film-forming organic structure preventing scale from adhering to pipes and the boiler surface
- Helping dissolve existing boiler scale
Fuel Loss by Scale Thickness
- 1 mm scale layer: fuel loss 6-8%
- 2 mm scale layer: fuel loss 10-15%
- 3 mm scale layer: fuel loss 25-30%
- 4 mm scale layer: fuel loss 30-35%
- 5 mm scale layer: fuel loss 35-40%
